Located along the shores of the Detroit River, the Detroit skyline is anchored by the Renaissance Center. The tallest building in the state of Michigan, the Renaissance Center is among a collection of buildings and other structures that make pictures of Detroit, Michigan a popular subject for framed city pictures and skyline panoramas.

Unlike other large American cities, Detroit has not entered the great skyscraper race. While cities like Chicago, New York and even Indianapolis have been trying to outdo each other, building taller and taller buildings, construction of new buildings in downtown Detroit has been less intense. One Detroit Center, the only building coming close in overall height to the Renaissance Center, was built in 1993 and stands just over 600 feet tall.

Most high rise structures along the Detroit skyline were built well before the 1980 giving the city an aged look with a combination of Art Deco and Neo Gothic architectural styles. Older buildings dating back to the turn of the Twentieth Century still grace pictures of Detroit, Michigan.

Founded in 1700 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Detroit has several well known and well deserved nicknames. As the long time hub of the American automobile industry and music, Detroit is fondly referred to as the Motor City or Motown for short.
